Children's Gala at Ohope The Whakatane Businessmens Committee in connection with the U.S.A. Oueen Carnival announces the promotion of a Grand Gala Day and Children's Picnic at Ohope Bcach on January 29 (Anniversary Day) to lie followed in. the evening by a Carnival Dance. The afternoon's proceedings will be improved by a special display by members of the Ohope Surf Club. Hospital Amalgamation Borough Councillors found difficulty in meeting the Coun'ty Council on the suggested date (Decern-* bcr 18) for the purpose of discussing the proposed amalgamation with the Waikato Hospital District. At last Monday night's meeting the close proximity to Christmas and tiie difficulty of attending a day meeting were mentioned. It was finally left to the Mayor to discuss •the matter with the County Chairman again and arrange a mutual date. Presbyterian Maori Mission The Rev. J. G. Laugliton, eral Superintendent of the Presbyterian. Maori Mission } has appointed one of his Maori Ministers the Rev. M. Fraser f missioner aijd chaplain to Maoris > late of the Tokaanu Presbyterian Maori Mission j to the temporary charge of Kaweran Maori in the absence of Miss Milr roy on holidays. Mr Eraser's appointment is only for six weeks as from December 7 to end of January. In February he will be returning to Rotorua and will "resume local duties again among his own people (the Arawas). While engaged in the Kaweran district, he Avill pay occasional visits to the Te Teko Maori Mission. Compliments Exchanged At the conclusion of the routine business last Monday the members of the Borough Council indulged in the. usual light supper arid complimentary exchanges. Following th§ Loyal Toast, Cr Shapley proposed the health of His Worship the Mayor and coupled with his. good wishes the name of the Mayoress. Mr Barry replied thanking councillors for their co-operation and support during the year. Other toasts were: 'The Finance Committee' Crs Spring and Good; 'The Works Committee' Crs Warren and Canning; 'The Ladies' Crs Morpeth and J. Creeke; 'The Staff' Cr Sullivan and Messrs Lysaght and Henderson; 'The Press' Cr C. Armstrong and Mr C. Kingsley-Smith.
