CRICKET

WIN FOR WHAKATANE ROTORUA OUTCLASSED Last weekend the Rotorua Cricket Association's representative team was soundly beaten by Whakatane at Whakatane. Visii.ing supporters of Rotorua considered their side a comparatively strong leam } but the standard of cricket revealed by this side was of a low standard. Whakatane is able to field a strong side and over the past three seasons has proved very difficult to play into a losing position whether at iiome or away from home. The standard of local cricket is proved comparatively strong and particularly encouraging. Whakatane's strength was not, however solely responsible for Rotorua's poor display. Rotorua's bowling was very weak and their batting apart from the presence ol' two known good batsmen who unfortunately failed on the day was equally weak. Batting for Whakatane McKenzie was more restrained than usual and reaped the benefit of his discretion. His century*was a good effort in spite of inferior bowling. Fisher's sparkling 37 in practically no time at all was one of the highlights of the game. Batting for Rotorua Curtis witlx a stubborn 31 not prevented what threatened to be a disastrous innings for Rotorua. At one stage four wickets were down for 5 runs. Bowling lor Whakatane Ducker was very steady and bowled some very good balls. The wicket keeping of Still for Rotorua was of a high class and was appreciated by spectators and players alike. The outfield was in a bad state and prpty-abl-y prevented Whakatane -from running nearer to three hundred runs.
