TEXT-BOOKS FOR HIRE
EXTENSION TO EX-SERVICE j STUDENTS Approval from Cabinet was recently given to extend to ex-sei'Vice-men students taking education courses, with rehabilitation assistance the text-book lending library scheme operated by the Army Education Welfare says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. This library from which students maj r hire books at moderate was established in March., 1943. It covers a wide variety of subjects and includes certain books which arc now otherwise unobtainable or are in short supply. Ranging from accoustics to zoology } text-book subjects covered number 139. Already j after only one months operation of the new there, are more than 100 ex-service-men students taking advantage of the scheme, which offers no less than K^OOO'books from which to choose. Hire fees are charged at the rate of 20 per cent, of the value of the books. This allows for a life of five 3'ears each book and provides for replacement at the end of that period. Books are applied for at local rehabilitation offices. Throughout the war years more than 5,000 servicemen in New Zea- 4 land and the Pacific zone have used the text-books library service, which |is meant to meet the needs, of university and equivalent studies. A similar organisation worked with equal success both in the jNliddle East and in England.
