HOT WATER

lIOW TO GET INTO IT

AX IXTERESTIXG ADDRESS

A somewhat novel inLcrltitle at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last Thursday evening was providefl by Mr V. Hayncs ; who gave an inter, esiing talk and demonstration on water-divining. Air 11. G. Warren by way of insaid thai the question of water-divining was exercising the minds of many people in tins town and district. There was for instance the belief that a flow of hot water lay under the borough and was connected with the Awakeri Hot Springs. If such a supply could be tapped it would be invaluable to feed say a tepid swimming bath. Air Haynes in his interesting talk stated that he had traced the llow of a certain stream all the way from Awaken across the Borough boundary over Kopeopeo anid cutting across the Domain at approximately the position Avhere the proposed •SAvi mining hath wa.s to be built under the new 'development scheme. The stream itself, he was regular in its width—approximately .'soft and was about 100 ft below surface. The course appeared to lie in alignment with Tarawera and White Island. There were known to be about six Agents Avhere hot water was springing up on this line anid it Avas fairly obvious that it must be in an unbroken Hoav.

Mr Haynes made it clear that lie had merely come to outline the results of his discoveries in this connection. If the Council were interested, he would be glad to cooperate and if success attended any efforts which might be made to tap that supply he would be doubly pleased. A hearty vote of thanks was carried to Mr Haynes by acclamation. The chairman initmated that he and one or two others had constituted themselves into a working who would be prepared to sink an experimental bore on the site indicated in the Domain, lie would be reporting back later.
