A -humming bi rd one srrrirner built her nest in a maple tree near tlie window of a big house. In the window sat a naturalist. The man watched the bird build her wonder- 1 Jul nest. Next he .saw her lay her eggs snugly in it. One day he saw her feeding three little baby bids. Some days after that as the man was watching the mother bird ? a heavy shower of rain began. And this is what the man saw, as he w r atched to see hoAV the bird kept her littlo ones safe and j dry. At the very first drops of rain she plucked off a large leaf growing near and taking it in her bill laid it over the nqst in such a way as to cover it like an umbrella.

In that way the clev T er mother bird kept her little ones dry.
