WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE BRANCH INTERNATIONAL DAY OBSERVED The Whakatane Women's Institute held its November meeting in the Caledonian Ilall on Tuesday November (). Mrs Crozier presided over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened witlP the Institute Song and Aspirations. The thought for the day "Life is not sabotage to be saved out of the world but an investment to be used in the world." Apologies were received from Mesdames Sims ? Linsell t Dodd Ruslibrook, Kerr Jones and Lars en. Extension of time was granted for the drawing of the Art Union for the Building Fund. A letter of thanks was read from the Secretary of the Rotorua Boy Scout Trust Committee for assistance from the AVomen's Institutes at their benefit concert also from the R.S.B. Plunket Society for help in their concert. An invitation from Edgecumbe and Taneatua to their respective birthday gatherings was extended to members also from the League of Mothers to a social afternoon on November 27.

The Golden Thread — was emphasised by Mrs Larmer who played a Sonata of Beethoven in her usual charming manner.

The report of the Council held at Waimana was read by Mrs Cantrell. Mrs Sutcliffe then gave a very interesting reading on China. There was also some very beautiful Cihne.se crockery on display. Members were reminded of the Arts and Crafts, meeting to be held at Mvs Print's residcncc, and also of the Gardening Circle at Mrs Sutclilfc s home. Several members donated soap for Unrra. Mrs Moran as usual Avas kept very busy at the Bring and Buy Stall.

Competitions. resulted: Three roses: Mrs Patterson 1: Mrs Matthews 2. Cauliflower: Mrs Teasdalc 1; Mrs Cairns 2. A tea cosy was won by Mrs E. Smith. Afternon tea was served by the hostesses. The National Anthem brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close.
