Admissions —r>2 males, 67 females total Hi). Discharges—34 males 77 total 131. Deaths —2 males, 2 females, total 1. Remaining in October 31 —50 males;. 51 females, total 101. Births—B males. 12 females total 20. OperationsMajor i) minor 31. Daily average occupied beds 98.03. Variety in Hats A casual observance of the hats, displayed by many of the Maoris who have been in town over the past few days en route to Whale Island for the. mutton bird season, has been somewhat astonishing. There is, first and the most common of all—the battered old felt hat which reigns supreme. The new type of felt hat follows (very few of this variety) while 90 per cent, of the youthful males f tend towards the Tom Mix style complete, in some with silver studded hat band, and crown properly dented. In the straws } we noticed many varieties all without exception, bearing 'the hall mark of time and use. But the one which 'capped' them all was .seen in the Strand only yesterday. It was an old and battered yet easily red IV /! '
