FAILURE TO REGISTER
SOCIAL SECURITY DEFAULTER
YOUNG LABOURER FINED
Pleading guilty to a charge of having failed to register under the requirements, of the Social Security Act since May 25, HM;> ? Thomas Henry Carmichael a young labourer appeared before Mr E. L. Walton in the Whakatanc Magistrate's Court last Tuesday and was lined £2 and costs amounting to 255.
Sergeant Farrell stated that de. Pendant when interviewed by the police had been quite frank about it and admitted his offence.
Under the same heading the llnngitaiki Plains Dairy Company ? which had given defendant temporary employment during the 'rush' period last December was proceeded against on the grounds that steps had not been taken to ensure that toe had been registered.
Sergeant Farrell said that the discovery of Carmichael's default had led. to the. second prosecution in that the defendant company had failed to take measures to examine his Social Security vouchers as re. quired to do before employing him.
Mr O.tlcy who defended contended that the action was most unfortunate in view qf the Company's great war effort. With the exception of the Secretary.Manager the whole of the office and administrative staff had been lost during the war and the factory had lost all its lit men. In spite of this production had been maintained though at times it had* almost been faced with a breakdown. At times the labour shortage had been desperate and the examination of Social Security vouchers of a casual hand such as the defendant had been overlooked in the stress of maintaining operations. The prosecution was very unfortunate. Fined 20s and costs 225.
