CENSUS RETURNS
WHAKATANE BOROUGH INCREASE THOUSAND NEW RESIDENTS The census returns for the Borough of Whakatane show that the population has grown from 17.°,3 in i If)3f> to 12801 in the present year. This means that in the intervening nine years approximate]}- 1071 new residents have been added to the town. The new figu*e is yet a further in, dication of the phenomenal growth of the town ; and if the. overflow population now living at Chopo through laclc of accommodation within the Borough were added it would increase this figure by a i'ur-» ther 270. A similar striking increase is expected from the County figures when these, become available. By way of comparison it is interesting to note the position in other centres which have already been announced. They are. as follows:—
