WHAKATANE WINS
BRIGADE'S REMARKABLE SHOWING BAY FIRE DEMONSTRATION ALL TROPHTES ANNEXED When the public of Whakatane responded so well to the invitation of witnessing the annual Bay of Plenty Fire Brigade 'Demo' which was held in the Domain vestordav "J they had the double pleasure of witnessing the local Brigadesmen annexing the principal trophies and tying for the remaining third (the Hawkins Cup) with the keen run-ners-up Matamata. The remarkable manner in which- the local men carried through to success in all their tests was an obvious tribute, to .their training and instruction under their popular Supervisor Mr Frank Stewart. The performances of the Whakatane Brigade may be guaged ">y the following list of total aggregate points won on the various day's performances:—
Whakatane 53 points, Matamata 30, Tauranga 28, Mount Maunganui 27y 2 , Opotiki 19 f Te Pulte 18 1 /.- To the Brigade goes the Chilton Cup and five trophies'(highest points in all wet events); the Hugo Memorial Shield (winners of the i.men disabled hose) and the Hawkins Memorial Cup championship) which will be shared with Matamata, the tying team. The 'Demo' can be regarded as a complete success. Tt was well run and from the public's point of view deeply interesting and instructive. Tlie standard throughout was «>:eeptionally high and never failed to capture the admiration of the crowd - . The event which held the greatest interest was perhaps the two-men hose and stand-pipe, in which the Whakatane team (Firemen Hurndell and Allen) put up the remarkable time of 37 seconds. The visiting Matamata pair came a close second being only 3-sths of a second behind . The results of the various pvents. were as under:— One-man Coupling: Wha .tatane and Matamata 1.13 3-5 (1); Opotiki 1.24 1-5 (2); Tauranga 1.38 3-5 (4); Te Puke 1.35 (3); Mt. Maunganui 1.42 4-5 (5).
Two-men Hose and Standpipc: Whakatane H7se.cs (1); Matamata 37 2-5 (2); Mt. Maunganui 41 1-5 (3); Tauranga 51% (4): Opoti'ki 85 (5),; Te Puke disqualified. Three-men Disabled Hose: Whakatane 49 (1); Matamata 55 (3); Te Puke 58 3-5 (3); Tauranga 63 4-5 (4); Mt. Maunganui 64 (5); Opotiki 74 ((5). Four-men Hose and Stand wipe: Whakatane 12 4-5 (1); Tauranga 44 4-5 (2); Matamata 18 4-G (3); Te Puke 52 3-5 (4): Mt. Maunganui 53 (5); Opotiki 03 2-5 (6). Four-men Disabled Hose: Whakatane 49 (1); Mt. Maunganui 58 4-f> (2); Opotiki (j() 4-5' (3); Tauranga 65 3-5 (4); Te Puke 75 4-5 (5); Matamata 77 4-5 (6). The warmest congratulations were forthcoming for the local brigade the visiting judges combining in their remarks that the all-round performance would be hard to beat anywhere. The Demonstration was particularly well run and all events went off without a bitch. This was mainly due to the forethought and careful planning for which the local brigade was mainly responsible. Visiting Firemen were loud in their praise for the organisation and efficiency Avith which all events were handled. The list of officials were as under:—Judges: Superintendents F.
