VISITING 'HAWAIIANS'

ORCHESTRA FROM AUCKLAND NOVELTY TO WHAKATANE The novelty of dancing to Hawaiian music attracted over two hundred couples to the King Sti eet I Hall on Tuesday evening where 'Bertie' (whose one desire, like Cyril Fletcher, is apparently to remain anyonymous) and his visiting band of 'Hawaiians' supplied a night ol' high entertainment for dancing fans of the district. Patrons came from far and wide and at an early hour, the halt was packed. Dances were both old-time and modern and every number proved its popularity with the crowd. The orchestra itself, consisted of a piano, electric steel guitar, Spanish guitar and drums, and the music had a J distinct Hawaiian tang, lent no doubt by the. second of the above instruments w'hich was in the hands of a master of the art.

Actually the dance was represent, ed as a plain and fancy dress carnival but out of the large crowd, there were but fifteen or so who arrived in fancy dress. Halfway through the evening, a parade of these was held, and the winners, Miss Pat Sims '(Spanish Lady) and Mr K. Civil (Gondolier) were selected . v An old-time waltz competition proved to be exceedingly popular, and might be taken as a feature which could be included in some future functions held in Whakatane. Two heats and a final were run, the winners being Mr and Mrs W. A. Thomson. A further foxtrot competition although- not so well supported 'as the waltz competition nevertheless had a fair number of entrants. Winners were Mr Bob Byrne and Miss A. Necdham. A light supper of tea and biscuits was served and dancing concluded at 1 a.m. Lucky door ticket winners were 'Miss F. Fife, Miss Beryl Flint and Mr George Ramson. A £1 Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs Gup_ till.
