WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE BRANCH ANNUAL BIRTHDAY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the 'Methodist Hall on October 2. The hall was packed ,to capacity owing to it being the Birthday meeting. Mrs Crozicr opened the meeting by welcoming all visitors and hoped they would enjoy the j afternoon. Greetings from Sister Institutes were. read. The hall was tastefully decorated and the Arts and Crafts display showed some very good talent. Also on display were the prizes for the Art Union which is being run for the benefit of the building fund. All articles were made by members of the Arts, and Crafts Class. The Bring and Buy Stall was as usual well responded to. One new member was enrolled— Mrs Flint. , Entertainment went with a swing the lirst item being two elocutionary numbers by Mrs Ranby and was very much appreciated. A tableau of the Institute song was next members being dressed in the costumes of eacli country the gay colours making a very nice setting. The Glee Circle then rendered two songs 5 ' Nymphs and Shepherds" and "Where eer 3 r ou Walk" and were well ap_ plauded. A play by members. "The Cottage Tea Room" was very hum-i orous those taking part being Mrs Albiston Mrs Darvill Mrs Teasdale Mrs Print and Mrs Litchwark.

A dainty afternoon tea was then served. The beautiful birthday cake made by Mrs Hepburn Snr. was cut and passed round to each -member. A very good effort for UNRRA was a quilted cot blanket donated by the Institute. A wall competition, General Knowledge was won by Mrs and a dinner was won by Mrs J. King Jnr. Competitions for the afternoon were, won as follows: (A) } A jam jar of flowers for effect: Mrs Fennell 1; Mrs Hannah 2. (.B) j Tomato relish: Mrs Murphy 1; Mrs Fennell 2. (C) ? Rhubarb: Mrs Patterson 1; Mrs Jensen 2. (Jod Save the King brought a very enjoyable afternoon to a close. Gardening Circle The Gardening Circle was held on September 18 at Mrs Fennell's residence at the Wliakatane Golf Links. Present were Mesdames- Crazier Jones ? Caisley, Bennett Armstrong Stewart Larsen Hannah Fennell ' 1 5 Dixon and Murphy. Apologies were received from Mesdames Cairns Rowan. t Sutclifl'e and Sloane. The reading. Kitchen Garden for was read bj r members and Mrs Bennett gave a reading on water lilies. Mrs Fennell gave a demonstration on grafting. The members by the way of a change tried their hand at a golf driving and putting competition which was won by Mrs Hannah. Afternoon tea was served and a very pleasant afternoon brought to a close.
