WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

EASTERN BAY FEDERATION 81-ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING The Bi-annual Council Meeting of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Women's Institutes was. held in the Waimana Hall on September 27. There was. a good attendance of delegates and members also Mrs Barnieoat, the I)resident of the Dominion Executive. Mrs Wjide on behalf of the. Wai-mana-Nuluihou Institute welcomed: Mrs Barnieoat, members of the exe-1 cutive and all. present and hoped all would have an enjoyable day. She then presented a lovely spray of llowers to Mrs Barnieoat Mrs Le I Lievre and Mrs Mayo. The meeting opened with the observance of two minutes isilcnce to mark the return of peace. The singing of Comrades and Friends followed. Mrs Le Lievre president 9 * also welcomed the visitors.

Apologies for absence were received, and the minutes and corrc_ spondence were dealt with. The V.O's gave their Mrs Withy stating she had visited all the Institutes in her area except Galatea, and hoped to visit them at the earliest time possible, and she was to be able to report the formation of a new Institute, at Thornton. Mrs YVoollield gave a report of the recent Drama Festival / held in Opo. tiki and Mrs Stewart stated she had been as far as Te Kaha and demonstrated arts and crafts. The remits were presented and discussed and voted on. The profit from the Drama Festival held in Whakatane was £27 10s and Opotiki £10 2s 9d. After the luncheon adjournment the Institute and Patriotic reports for six months work were presented and all Institutes, seemed to have had a very busy and happy time. At this JYlrs Barnicoat addressed the gathering and expressed her appreciation at the Federation arranging to have the meeting to lit in with her visit to the Bayj fjff Plenty. During her two years as president, she said she. had visited every Federation in the Dominion. Mrs Barnicoat congratulated the Federation on winning the '"Robert Young Cup," and said the Eastern Bay Federation was most loyal and helpful to the Dominion Executive. She asked Institutes to help the blind persons who were near them ii\ the teaching of crafts etc. and asked that patience be exercised in the rehabilitation of men and women ) as they suffered from frayed nerves and needed help. As Mrs Roosevelt "work bard to win the peace * and harder to keep the peace," and give men their jobs to do when they veturn. Mrs Barnicoat urged Institutes to continue with Drama etc. and encourage Maoris to join Women's Tn-> stitutes as they found the move, ment most helpful. She put forward many helpful ideas for future Institute meetings and wished all many happy years of working lor the jnovement. Mrs Barnicoat was warmly thanked for her most instructive and

helpful address and a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. Mrs Le Lievre then asked Mrs Barnicoat to present a Long Service Ribbon to Mrs 'Caverhill t who lias given loyal service to the Institute and. Federation for many years. Mrs- Armstrong on behalf of the also asked Mrs Caverhill to accept a gift of a Pyrex dish in appreciation of her great help in past years. Mrs Caverhill thanked one and all for the gifts and stated she found the wor'k*most interesting and hoped to help still further in the future. The. delegate elected to attend the Dominion Conference was Mrs Caverhill. The day's: competitions were as follows:—Bowl of spring flowers arranged for effect: Opotiki 1; WaL mana 2. Victorian posy: Matata 1. Eggless butterle.ss and sugarless, cake: 'Waimana 1. Child's print frock (j to 10 years: Mnnawahc 1. Afternoon tea and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
