Sir, —Your editorial of the 9th inst. refers to the unfortunate break- . down in the international discussions. The breakdown had to come even if Mr Eden had remained Foreign Minister. A new factor has come into the picture and that is the complete absence of a common standard of truth and morality. What according to our standards is blacky the Russians declare is white. What we hold to be the opposite of democratic government—what we hold to be government by fear or terror the Russians declare is demo, cracy. We understand all the humhypocrisy and absence of morals which characterised any dealings with Hitler and Mussolini but hacl great hopes of being able to cooperate with Russia. A little thought would have told us of the utter impossibility of co-operation. Our moral standards are based on Christianity—the moral basis of Socialism is quite different. As Lenin puts it ? "A morality outside of human society does not exist for us; it is a fraud. For us morality is subordinated to the interests x of the proletarian struggle." This in practice means that 'a lie is a a crime is a virtue if it promotes the socialist cause. The moral basis of Socialism is the complete absence of objecti\&e truth and morality. Once we grasp' this fundamental truth then we can understand why we have, seen in Socialist Gerfhany j Italy and Russia in the past 20 years more persecution and acts of barbarism than at any period in world history. It was> inevit-» able that under the influence of a political philosophy which is both anti-democratic and anti-Christian the world should be slipping back to barbarism. What people do nQt understand is that you cannot give socialism a trial and then after a period, of years vote it out if you do not like it. You cannot keep changing the economic system from private, ownership or control to public ownership and control and then back again. Socialism or economic planning is a permanent economic condition necessitating a permanent socialist government criticism of which Becomes a major crime. Opposition has been treason in every totalitarian state - for tlie very obcious reason »"hat a state could not be totalitarian on any other basis. Yours etc., / M.DARRAU.
