GATHERING AT AWAKERI

An •exceptionally large crowd gathered in, the Awakeri Hall ,011 Saturday for an organised Welcome Home Dance visitors being present from Whakatane and Taneatua as well as a full response from the Awakeri district. The Premier Dance Band supplied a good programme of mo. dern and old-time numbers, the duties of M.C. being performed in the usual lively manner by Mr C. Mac Donald. After supper had been dispensed and it was a full time job for tbe ladies and helpers the gathering being so large ? Mr D. Butler in very cordial manner welcomed home on behalf of those present the guests , . 9 ot the evening. They were Driver !J. Fowell rturned from the Middle East and LAC J. Fletcher from the Pacific. The boys received a very loud ovation which' quite drowned their attempts to respond to: Mr Butler's remarks. Mr Butler apologised for the absence of Pte A. Atkinson, W. 0.1. Les Young and Sgt Tui Melville. "We will get them again " he said. '' 1 Dancing was resumed until mid. nighty the majority remaining to the end and maintaining the same lively spirit. A competition for a box of cigars was won by Mr while the fourth! heat of the £6 Monte Carlo was won by Miss I. Sullivan and Mr Dick Hansen.
