PURCHASE OF HERD SIRES
With the. approach of the season for buying dairy farmers, would be well advised to remember that the real test of a bull's value lies in his capacity to leave higb. producing daughters (stated an article by Massey Agricultural College), The most reliable basis for judgment has been proved to be the production of his rather than the. bull's'own pedigree which; while being important, can lead to disappointing results. It is becoming more ami more recognised that a good sire will produce good daughters. no matter in what herd he mav
j be. used; and that it is unwise to (discard good bulls because pf their | age, provided they are still reasonably fertile. Many progressive farm, ers have been assisted in their choice by the register published recently bv the New Zealand Dairy Board, which has indicated in the list of nearly 2000 bulls already surveyed( tho.se which are considered to be specially good breeding animals. Included in the register are tlie productions of cows WiEB goO3i lifetime records and those of younger high-producing females.
