OBITUARY

MR R. F. JACKSON

The death occurred in Whakatane recently of Mr Richard Fearon Jackson a pioneer settler in the Motu district and widely known throughout the Gisborne and Opotiki districts. Mr Jackson had been il! i'or some time and suil'ered a .seizure from which he did not recover, He was born in United Kingdom and married there before coming to New Zealand ().") years ago. He anu his wife spent two or three years in Canterbury and then took lip residence in llawke's Bay lor about 20 years. Later they moved to Gisborne and after a short stay in town Mr Jackson secured a section in the. Marumoko some distance from the Molu township and heavily covered with bush. lie occupied the section -J2 years ago and effected steady improvement in the property. During his residence of approximately years at .Marumoko, Mr Jac'kson was keenly interested in local affairs, and he was for some years a member of the Opotiki County Council as well as exercising the offices of game warden and a justice of the peace. He was also at one time a member of the Bay of Plenty Licensing. Committee. He was a pioneer in many directions, and was the lir&t district importer of a type of waggon especially designed for narrow bill country loads. The ill-health of Mk over a period of yeafls ended in her death 1G years and later Mr Jackson retired from active farming, and lived in Gisborne at lluatoria and at Whakatane, He was 86 vears of age at his death and is survived by two daughters, Mesdames F. Hansen and H. F. Hoisehier of Whakatane and Gisborne respectively and one Mr R. F. Jackson, jun., of Marumoko. There are three brothers Messrs. John and Herbert Gisborne and Mr T. Jackson Motu, and four grandchildren also surviving. The funeral took place at Motu on Sunday last.
