CELEBRATING VICTORY
BALL AT OTAKIRI RECORD CROWD ATTENDS The Victory Ball held in the Otakiri Ilall on September 4 ? was the most outstanding success of any function previously held in the district. Crowds came from far and near and at a very early hour it was pasnrt that there, would be a record attendance and in spite of it being a large hall it was quite a later, to keep sufficient floor space for dancing. The decorations were most attrac-' tive and the orchestral stand with its masses of beautiful flowers and greenery added to the festive appearance, as did also the "Bar" at 1 \vhi«h "Claret Cup" was served. Those in charge of this popular re-* freshment were kept very busy attending to the dancers as they <=> ? presented, their green tickets. Bright music was supplied by the Rhythm who with "Charlie" at the piano were a popular combination, Mr Lord in the capacity of Master of Ceremonies carried through an excellent programme of dances including the popular Hokey Tokey which was done with much zest. Confetti also added to the gay atmosphere of the evening. All agreed that the. supper was marvellous and the ladies responsible for it deserved the highest praise for the organisation which' made possible the efficient serving of such generous helpings of delicious jellies, creams etc. to over 4.00 people in the minimum of time, All kinds of cakes and savouries followed . Not only was the evening to celebrate it was also the ! appy occasion of Welcoming Home H. Woods who has been a prisoner of war for some years. P. Watson and M. R. N. Z. A. F. and O. Swan and also to make the district presentations to Ai Smith, K. Woods f G. Walley, H. H. Revell A. Evans E. Good all of •? > whom had been previously welcomed home. Mr W. J. Chairman of the Patriotic Committee, extended a warm welcome to the on behalf of the district.
Mrs Armstrong expressed the good wishes of the ladies of the district and presented hand knitted pull-, overs to H. Woods, K. Woods P. 1 9 Watson and, M, Woodbury.
Mr Dunning Chairman of the District Farewell and Welcome Home Committee in a few well chosen words called on each of the principle guests to accept cheques as a small gesture of appreciation from the Otakiri district,. The crowd voiced its appreciation as each man stepped forward. Musical honours and rousing cheers were accorded them.
Sergeant A. Smith replied for the Army extending thanks for the fine work done by the Patriotic Fund Board for them while overseas to
the District Welcome Home Committee and to the Welfare Committee who were looking after them now they were home.
M. Woodbury returned thanks on behalf of Air Force members.
Dancing continued, with zest till
2.30 a.m
The beautiful large box of chocolates, was won by 11. Foote and the iced cake by J. Pearee. The crochet supper cloth drawn recently was won by Mrs Keyes j of Te Puke.
