OHOPE A LIABILITY

COUNTY COUNCIL'S CONTENTION

EXPENDITURE EXCEEDS

REVENUE!

In rebuttal of the recent queries made at the Borough Council meeting and in the press' concerning the rating reverue accruing from Ohope Beach ( and the consequent liability of the County Council to provide a substantial grant to the Domain the Chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett, declared at last Tuesday's meeting that Ohope actually cost the Council £200 more annually than was collected in rates. Enlarging on this, he said that the general rate on Ohope only realised £314. Against this, the Council's expenses including the £100 grant made to assist the Domain Board amounted to no less than £515. The position at the present time was, therefore, that the Council spent £200 more on the beach than it was collecting in the. form of rates. Cr Leslie: Actually, Ohope is a liability. The clerk: That's the case. Cr Hunter: I contend that the Borough ought to take over Ohope, or at least find as much, by way of a grant as the County. The beach is used far more by townspeople than by those in the country. It also attracts tourists who bring good business to the town and I contend that next year we should pay no more than the Borough.

Cr Cawte contended that the Borough Council's action in finding only £10 was not a fair thing.

Cr McCracken: I doii't think the Borough Council is giving the County much consideration. Their donation was neither reasonable nor fair.

[ think they ought t6 reconsider jit. rt certainly reflects no credit on the town and they ought to be told about it.

Cr Leslie: About a penny per head of population.

Cr McCready concluded the discussion by saying that lie hoped Ohope would not be taken over by the Borough as it would spell its. death sentence as far as rates were concerned. Whakatane had heavy ''.ling responsibilities to look forward to in the future and there was the pros*pect of another three, shilling rate unless they were careful

Even at the Heads, ratepayers Jiacl been painfully aware of the steep increase, since the Borough took over.
