Tree 50,000,000 Years Old

A discovery of considerable scientific interest was recently made by Mr R. C. Read on his property in the Tuapeka Flat district Otago. The. find is a portion of a small fos. siliscd tree which Mr Read discovered in some rock formation and which lie handed to the Otago Muscling where it is now on (display. r l he specimen was referred to the | geology department of the Otago which has reported that the quartzite deposit in which the wood was fossilised dates to the beginning of the Tertiary period and is therefore , about 50, years old. When found the fossil 1 was believed to be contemporary with the schists which underlie the quartzite but inspection shows it to be of the' period while the schists are vastly more, ancient. For all that the fossil probably holds the record for age of timber in Duncdin at the

present time
