Tree 50,000,000 Years Old
A discovery of considerable scientific interest was recently made by Mr R. C. Read on his property in the Tuapeka Flat district Otago. The. find is a portion of a small fos. siliscd tree which Mr Read discovered in some rock formation and which lie handed to the Otago Muscling where it is now on (display. r l he specimen was referred to the | geology department of the Otago which has reported that the quartzite deposit in which the wood was fossilised dates to the beginning of the Tertiary period and is therefore , about 50, years old. When found the fossil 1 was believed to be contemporary with the schists which underlie the quartzite but inspection shows it to be of the' period while the schists are vastly more, ancient.
