EDGECUIMBE'S FUTURE
RANGITAIKI DOMAIN BOARD
RECREATION GROUND QUESTION
Plans for a Domain Extension bat" the centre of the E'clgecumbe township have now been abandoned* oat the advice of the Under Secretary: *' of Lands, Mr R. G. . McMorran. la.' his letter to the Board Mr McMor-» ' ran stated that he felt~it would be better for all concerned if a new - township site was considered. This decision has disappointed the Board whose aim has been the development of a central playing area. To this end the public was invited to subscribe the purchase price of an area of land owned by the Whakatane i Paper Mills at Edgecumbe on which I the Domain Board bad an option.. The response to the appeal was excellent and the Board required only the consent of the Minister of JL,and& to complete, negotiations. The con.-* sent has been withehkl and the option accordingly, relinquished. This latest development indicates that* Government Officials have not aban.- . doned the scheme of removing thet township to a new site indeed itt strengthens the belief that the mea-* sure will be introduced.
