MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT
NATIVE WOMAN ASSAULTED
RUATOKI MAORI'S OFFENCE
In the. Whakatane Court yesterday? before Messrs G. A. Brabant and C. H. Christensen, J.P.s Hupa Te Pairi pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting one Te Hirata Hawai a female } by striking her on the left. eye. The offence was alleged to have taken place at Ruatoki on August 24.
Constable Tbomasson of Taneatua, stated that accused was a foster
brother of Hawai and the two lived together with the rest of the fam-
il3 r . On the night in question I whilst Te Pairi was. out Hawai removed the bedding from Te Pairi's bed and placed it in another room, Some time later Te Pairi returned and entering the room ) struck her with hi.s list. He then left the house and did not return until he was arrested and brought back to Ruatoki ; where he admitteu the offence. Accused was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment in the Whakatane gaol.
