INCIDENT IN GRILL-ROOM

In the Whakatane Court last Tucs- • day, before Messrs G. Brabant and - J. King, J.Ps, a Poroporo Maori Piatt Merito, pleaded guilty to assaulting William J. Williamson, a grill-room proprietor on Wednesday August 15. ' Sergeant Farrell saiil that the. in-, cident occurred on the first Victory day, when the grill-room was overcrowded and when considerable unavoidable delay occurred in sending the customers. Accused had accost" I cd Williamson and complained about the delay, demanding to be served and claiming that the waitress was deliberately passing him by. Williamson had asked him to be patient but an argument had ensued, which developed into a scuffle in 'which Wil-
liamson fell to the floor, and accused trod on his hand, lacerating the finders. °
Accused said he went into tli e restaurant to be served but was consistently ignored by the Avai tress who attended to others who had come in alter him. He resented this and mentioned it to her. William'soil must have, heard the argument for the next thing he knew was that he was caught by the scruff of the neck and told to get out. i n , the lie had he admitted t accidentally trodden on Williamson's hand.
Ihe Bench took into account the fact that it was 'Victory' day, and considered a minimum fine of 20/-
would meet th e case. This was ae
cordingly imposed.
