WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE BRANCH

A most enjoyable meeting o-f the Whakatane Branch of the Women's Institute was- held in the Methodist Hall on August 7. Mrs Crozier presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Institute song and the Aspirations were read. The thought for the day was "Weed your own gar-< don fair for all men's sight before you plan to till another soil." An invitation was: extended to all members to attend the Waimana birthday.

A letter was read from the Blind Institute thanking members for the wonderful effort made in raising funds, at their last meeting. In answer to a letter from Headquarters fin reference to helping England with the food problem word was received to the effect that the Institute should send parcels direct to Food Controllers in London. Business for the afternoon being completed new members were then enrolled: Mrs Pettj r ? Mrs Jensen and Mrs Kilgour. Mrs Cro/.ier asked membes not to forget the Flower Show to be held next month.

It was very pleasing to note that the Bay of Plenty Federation won the cup for the best Cultural and Educational results.

Mrs Rushbrook gave a reading on the life of Handel a.njd the Glee Circle them sang one of his compositions "Where 'er You Walk." Mrs Rushbrook also playecl and sang "Conies Unto Him'''' 1 from Messilah Mrs Hepburn gave two elocutionary items which 1 were much appreciated. Mrs N. Matthews gave a very instructive demonstration on dressmaking members gaining some very good hints. Money raised from aprons given for the Building Fund brought in a very pleasing amount. The Bring and Buy Stall was well filled as usual. Competitions for the day were won as follows: ( x \) Quince jam, Mrs Stewart 1;. Mrs Hanna 2. (B) Three Iceland poppies Mrs Comer 1; Mrs Hanna 2. (C) Three carrots, Mrs Kerr 1; Mrs Fennel! 2.f A very dainty afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mrs Hepburn Snr. Mrs Hepburn; Jnr. Mrs Jones, Mrs Kellv Mrs Kerr and * " J Miss: Hooper. The National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. Garden Circle The monthly meeting of the Gardening Circle was held on July 17 at the residence of .Mrs Bennett. Readings on manuring seed sowing and tlie growing of Gladioli were read by Mrs Hannah and Mrs Cro-. zier. A talk on spraying was given by Mrs Fennell. The Roll Call, Uses of Herbs } was well responded to. Competition results were as follows: Onions Mrs- Hannah; cabbage Mrs Fennell. J
