INTERSCHOOL GAMES

FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL WHAKATANE DEFEATS KATIKATI To complete its series of interschool matches for the season the first fifteen of the Whakatane Disr trict High School travelled to Tauranga last Thursday to play the Katikati first fifteen. Some of the senior Whakatane boys who were to take part in the trial games, in the afternoon did not play, and in consequence a good even; game resulted. Although conditions in Whakatane were very unsettled, Tauranga experienced a fine sunny day, and the football in the second spell deteriorated to . some extent probably because of the heat.

The match began at a fast pace and Katikati drew first blood when their forwards secured from a loose rush and Pyc made a nice opening for Rapley to score. The Whakatane forwards retaliated an,d carried play almost to their opponents' goal line where a short pass from the loose enabled Rawson to score. Soon afterwards Whakatane secured possession from a line out and the ball went out to Bell who cut in and made a determined run, to score. The next try came when Taylor intercepted from the loose and passed to Schneller, who touched clown after a good run of 15 yards and; shortly afterwards K. Carter dropkicked a goal from a handy posi'ion. These reverses impelled the Katikati team to press the harder and they were awarded a penalty try, which was converted, bringing the halftime score to 13 —8. The second spell was characterised by up and down play iro which! Whakatane had the advantage but for some time could not finish off their movements to score. Finally Whakatane heeled the ball from a scrum anjd the ball went out to Bell who scored between the posts. Katikati continued to press, and were rewarded with another try, the game ending 16—11 in favour of Whakatane. The first fifteen has thus won three out of its four school games. Basketball Games As the A and B basketball teams had already beaten their Katikati opposite numbers fairly easily the C an,d D teams went to try conclusions with the Katikati girls.

The games were played in warm sunshine on the Tauranga Basketball Association's courts. After a good brisk game Katikati A team beat Wtaakatane C by 11 points to 2, but Whakatane D were able to defeat their opponents by 11 points to 5.
