LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

WHAKATANE BRANCH MEETS The WhaUatane branch of the League of Mothers, held its monthly inceting in the Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon. The President Mrs Gartshore, presided. Proceedings opened with the singing of the League's Hymn, after which the Rules and Objects of the League were recited by the pre&ir dent. The reports of the President and Treasurer were then read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President: Mrs. Gartshore (temporary); vice-presidents: Mesdamcs. W. B. Gow A. E. Bridge r and W. Sullivan; secretary: Mrs McKenzie; treasurer: Mrs Suckling (reelected); committee: Mesdames W. Bridgerf W. Howat Medcalfe. Barry Breward Shaw Woolliams, Rowan C, Armstrong M. Hamill and J. Warner, and officers. Mrs H. Hogg then read a very interesting article on the No. 1 Camp Japanese Prisoners of War written by the Padre. The prison-* ers cut off entirely from their native land and indeed dead as far as their relatives were concerned were living a new life to . them. They have proved to be very industrious and clever at manual work, especially at woodwork and the amount of finished good& stored around the camp makes one think they may yet prove to be an economic unit. The majority are confirmed Buddhists but who have been accepted as Christians. Whe-> ther the faith is genuine cannot be proved for they as yet speak very little of our language but they are all trying to speak English. Mrs Craddock, the retiring secretary then delighted the audience with a bracket of Hungarian dances arranged for the piano. The president thanked Mrs Craddock for her untiring work and interest iduring the eight years she had been secretary, and presented her With a shoulder spray. Mrs A. Shaw gave the thought for the month Look back with gratitude^

Look upwards with confidence Look forward with hope. Afternoon tea was dispensed by two committee members after which the meeting closed with the National Anthem..
