SEINE FISHING
RESTRICTED AREAS DEFINED
IMPROVED SUPERVISION
PLANNED
In answer to a petition from the people of Matata and a subsequent letter of complaint from the Matata Domain Board regarding the operations of Danish seine fishing boats oil the coast in that locality the Minister of Marine has replied as under:— "Seine boats are debarred by regulation from operating within two miles of the coast of Matata but this restriction does not apply further than three miles west of Matata. At present the Marine Department lias under consideration the extension of this two-<mile limit further to westward to join up with the closed area in the vicinity of Tauranga." It is. difficult to secure the apprehension of offenders against the regulations and the Department has been handicapped during the war by shortage of inspection staff and by the taking for Naval service of the large patrol launch 'Ikatere' which was built for the Auckland district. It is hoped that this boat will be released shortly and that it may be possible to improve the supervision of the Fisheries in the Bay of Plenty by the appointment of a permanent inspector for the district.
