Tfciiiperance Society The main item of interest at the July meeting of the Bay of Plenty S.D.A. Temperance Society was the reading from a book by six medical authorities of a chapter on "Unnatural Stimulants " by Dr. D. A. R. Aufranc M.R.C.S L.R.C.P, L.D.S. » i ♦ He shows how necessary natural stimulation is for good health; he also, shows the clear distinction between natural stimulants and those which are unnatural or artificial "because not only are they not required by the body, but they are extremely harmful to it." A number of unnatural stimulants are in common use today 3 the most prominent being alcohol. He. says: "Alcohol is a most deadly poison. It destroys all forms of protoplasm or living matter. As all the cells of the body. } including the heart and brain, cont£»h pro-toplas-m, it does not require much knowledge to see how deadly and far-reaching must be the action of alcohol as it passes along in the circulation from one organ to another. To take it in any j form is a sure means of shortening one's days and is only one of the many ways of committing suicide, and escaping detection, except by the medical attendant. In the light of modern research it has even ceased to be of value as a drug." The doctor's closing words are: "Perfect health—which means a sound } .-evenly balanced mind in a healthy body — S is about the greatest gift we can possess in thisi world ) but we shall not keep this treasure for long if we cling to the use of unnatural stimulants in any form." — Advt.
