PATRIOTIC QUOTA

BOROUGH COMMITTEE MEETS

Hi's Worship 'the as chairman of the Whakatane 'Borough (including Ohope) Patriotic presided at the annual meeting held 1 last Tuesday evening when the past year was reviewed! and; the new year discussed in the light of the increased quota which has now to' be met. Mr Barry in his report stated that work -had been proceeding steadily and that both the Men's and Ladi.es* Committees were to be congratulated on the results. He mentioned the work of the canvassers who were as in the past carrying on with good spirit and meeting with a satisfactory response. The 1944 quota of £1514 had been fully raised with the co-operation of the ladies committee and he hoped the same, success would be achieved with the present appeal. This year the Whakatane Borough was asked to find 22 per cent, of the Zone quota which amounted to £1965—a substantial increase on last year's figure. The ladies had again offered to find £500 of this amount the men to find the balance. To date the ladies had paid in £310 and the men £752, making a total of £1003, and the sum of £903 still to be found. It was estimated that the sum of £590 was •still collectable (ladies £190, men £400), leaving a possible deficit of £313. He appealed to citizens generally to assist towards the mcnt of the full quota.

Mr Barry said that the executive committee had met several times to decide this year's form of. appeal and had also dealt with applications for assistance from the welfare fund. Two of these had been satisfactorily dealt with. A general discussion on the prospects of raising the new quota took place, and a number of questions regarding the. canvassing asked. The secretary, Mr D. V. stated that for the Victory Art Union, the sum of £121 went forward, from the Zone } including £79 10s from the Whakatane Committee. Mr B. S. Barry was re-elected chairman, and Mr D. V. secretary i The executive was also appointed as in the past:—the chairman and secretary of the general committee (as above); the chairman and secretary of the Men's Committee (Messrs W. Sull'ivan, M.P. and C. W. Good) and the. chairwoman and secretary of the Ladies' Committee (Mesdames W. Sullivan and J. E. Winstone).
