VARIATION OF APPOINTMENTS ~ ' I TWO MAORIS FIXED £•"> ] j Becausc they left their appointments to essential employment without authority from the District Manpower OfTiccr at two Maoris John Rnponi and Tauiwi Powhare were each fined £5 and costs 35 s plus; travelling expenses ol the i necessary witnesses in each case. The prosecutions were instituted by the National Service Department. In Raponi's case it was shown that defendant was the employee of the State Forest Pongakawa to which he had been directed in Sep,tember last. .According to the Forest Ranger, Wm. he came back after taking an unofficial holiday and merely informed witness] ■ that he had taken another job. He hall been given-'every opportunity • to come back but had refused to do so. - In Powhare's case the Manpower I Officer said defendant had been sent ; to Wilson Bros, mill at Tc Whaiti i in October last where lie stayed un- ' til the en'd oT the - year. Evidence - was given by the mill Mr f R. H. Burt. Fines were imposed as above.
