Water Supply Referring to suggestions to provide fire plugs in Clifton Road and at the Strand waterfront right of way the Foreman-Engineer submitted estimates of cost to the Whakatane Borough Council at its last meeting as follows: Clifton Road through main from Commerce Street to George Street £275, or a branch main through the property of the Bank of Australasia £75. Waterfront right of way main with' two fire plugs from Rivett's Buildings to opposite Native Department, office £142, or a branch main through vacant section by Grand Theatre to the same point, with two fire plugs, £102. The chairman reported that representations had been made that fire plugs be provided also at Eivers Road, It was resolved that the Foreman-Engineer repor ( t scheme and cost respecting Eivers Road reticulation and all the 9 above be then raised for consideration. Sanitary Service At the last meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, His Worship reported that he and the Clerk had •interviewed Mr Honey combe respecting his terminating sanitary contract. He was not adverse to the council calling tenders and had stated that if no tender was received he would be willing to continue for a further 12 months. He asked an increased payment to £4 10s per night or £13 10s per week. No tenders had been received. Payments to Mr Honeycombe last year totalled £634 at 9d. per pan per removal, and his request would involve an additional payment of £68 per annum to £702, which worked out at lOd per pan per removal. This would be £2 3s 4d per service per annum, so that the sanitary fee would have to be increased next year. It was resolved that this matter be left in the hands of the Maj or and the Clerk to finalise with the contractor.

Road Services to Galatea Tlie Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last evening decided to write the Road Services authorities, urging that now Galatea was being opened up for settlement by soldier farmers an improved transport should lie instituted between that district and Whakatane. Erosion at Borough River Bridge The Whakatane Chamber of Commerce at its meeting last evening decided to write the Minister of : Works strongly supporting the petition recently forwarded from, the County Council regarding the. serious erosion at the Town bridge approach and further that the present position of the river provides an opportune moment which if taken advantage of immediately might have the effect of remedying the position at the least possible expense. Further it was decided to wire the M.P. for the district urging him to represent. the whole matter urgently in the correct quarters. No Stock Route in Borough In answer to a query raised by Cr Canning at the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council last Monday evening, the Town Clerk notified that there was no recognised stock route through the Borough and no by-laws covering the relegation of travelling stock on Borough roads. Cr Canning drew attention to the bad state of the footpaths, in, GouLstone Road following a large mob of sheep being driven over it. He urged" that all stock should be confined to Alexander Avenue. fhe council decided, to request the Fore-man-Engineer to arrange for a diversionary route in future. Tale of a Teller Everyone has no doubt heard of pennies from heaven but few have ever experienced the emotion.. Fewer stilly have experienced it with half crowns, but a Beacon representative came fairly close to it the other day. A teller 'from one of the. local banks emerged Jrom the edifice wherein he vyas employed transporting a number of 30-penny pieces. He hajd just stepped on to the pavement when, suddenly his grasp slipped and lo and behold, halfcrowns teemed from his outstretched fingers, and clinked ironically on the footpath. Fortunately the locality was at that moment practically deserted so the teller was able to ret--9 trieve his clutch of erring coins* and go on his way rejoicing. Some tale! Some teller!
