FOOD FOR BRITAIN
GIFTS FROM EASTERN BAY RED CROSS APPEAL The suggestion was made recently to the Reel Cross Society by Mrs Morcom of Whakatane, that a collection of tinned food be donated from this district and sent to civilians in Britain who have, again had their rations' reduced. It would be * gesture of appreciation for all they nave so courageously endured during the last five and a half years. Red Cross Headquarters have igreed to arrange and the idea was enthusiastically adopted at i recent meeting of the Bay of Plenty Centre of the Red Cross Society, whose sub-centres will organise the appeal in their own districts. Many tins of food have •iv , »*idy been donated and it is hoped a really generous response will result. The following suggestions were made: Tinned meat and whitebait condensed and dried milk, cheese, honey, jam, Glucose D, etc. Tinned, fruit has not a high nutrition value so was not included. The Whakatane Branch of the Red Cross will hold a shop day on Friday, July 6 ? and donations of tinned food may lie left at the Red Cross shop or at Mrs Dainton's., King Street. The appeal is. to close on July 14. If each household in the district were to donate, this unique gesture should be a great success, and be welcome indeed to our kinsfolk, who have suffered so much of the hardships of war, which we have been spared.
