WHAKATANE BRANCH ENJOYABLE "SCOTCH'' AFTERNOON The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Methodist Hall 011 Tuesday } June 5. Mrs Crozier presided over a very good attendance oi' members and one new member, Mrs Cooper, was enrolled. An invitation to the Edgecumbe W.L. Birthday on Tuesday, June 19, Wiui extended to the members of Wliakatane. The resignation of Mrs Dockray was accepted with regret. Two Mrs Ranby and Mrs Murphy were chosen to attend the Drama meeting on Friday Btli in reference to the forthcoming Drama Festival which is held once a year. Suggestions on how to relieve the food situation in England were discussed and it was decided to write to Headquarters for full particulars. Suggestions were also raised on the proposed children's Eistedl'odd to be held in August. Mrs Crozier hoped that mere interest would be taken in the Gardening Circle this year as it was not only instructive but interesting as well. More singers for the Glee Circle were also called upon.
The business for the afternoon then being the Golden Thread talk was given by Mrs Rushbrook "Macdowell" being the chosen subject. The Glee Circle then rendered one of his compositions "To a Wild Rose." Mrs K. Stewart played two of his Woodland sketches entitled "In Autumn" and "By a Meadow Brook" which item was appreciated by all members'. The roll call, "Economic Hints," was well responded to, the hints being most acceptable in these days of rationing. Mrs Drube then sang "Coming Thru the Rye" and "John Anderson my J»." Letters from overseas were then read by several members thanking them for the p'arcels received from Whakatane. Members were reminded that Arts and Crafts classes were held every second and fourth Wednesday ot each month and the Gardening Circle every third Tuesday. The Glee Circle once again sang, the title being "Ye Banks and Braes" | and a play was given by members of the Drama Circle entitled. "Mechanical Jane" which caused much laughter. Those taking part were Mcsdames Cantrell, Ranby and Sutclifl'e. Two Scotch dances bj- Lennie Butler and piped by Don McKenzie were enjoyed by all. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Drube, Donaldson Snr., Donaldson Jnr. } Darvill Ewart Fennell and Grose. Competitions were won as follows: A, Tin of shortbread for soldiers parcels: Mrs Dixen. B, Best collection of six blooms, Mrs Linsell 1: Mrs Hanna 2. C, Three onions f Mrs Hanna 1; Mrs Murphy 2. Auld Lang Syne brought a very pleasant Scotch afternoon to a close. Gardening Circle The meeting of the Gardening Circle was held on May 15 at the residence of Mrs L. Si'sam } and being favoured with a sunny afternoon members preferred to hold it on the verandah. Mrs Fenr.ell presided over the five members present, while apologies were received from Mesdames Dixon ? Murphy and Larsen. Business was gone into, and as a competition, a tray of leaves was shown to those present who afterwards were required. |to write down the names of these from memory. Mrs Fennell was the winner with twelve correct. Competitions for the afternoon were: A Collection of berries: Mrs Fennell. B Three potatoes: Mrs Fennell. The serving of afternoon tea by the hostesses brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
