KING'S BIRTHDAY WEEK-END ,
TOURNAMENT
Ideal weather conditions prevailed over King's, Birthday week-end when a ladies' two-day tournament was held at the Whakatane Golf Club., This tournament ) the first of its) kind to be held on the local links proved to be a very successful and enjoyable one. The Sunday morning medal was; utilised for qualifying—the first Scompeting for an Open Even j thesecond 8 for a Major Handicap event, and the succeeding players in flights of eights. The Open event was played off the sticky the rest on handicap 1 match play. Consolation flights were also competed lor by those elimin- r ated in the first round of match play. A -Stableford Bogey competition was played on Sunday afteranother Medal 011 Monday morning and on Monday afternoon besides the finals in all sections /the rest of the field competed in a Can- > adian Foursome over nine holes. < The competition resulted: — Sunday Morning Medal Handicap: A, Mrs Black (Opotiki) 101—18—83-, B, Miss Nan'kivell 106—24—82; , C ( Miss Otley 126. x Sunday Stableford Bogey: A ? Mrs Armstrong 30; B ? Mrs Duncan 34; Miss M. Robins 20 . ' Monday Morning Medal Handicap: A, Miss Black 96—16—80; B j Miss Carter 102—24—78; C f Miss Witsoa 136. Monday Afternoon Canadian Foursomes: Miss Upton (Opotiki) ant! Mrs Donaldson. Best Gross Medal 36 holes: Mrs Symmans 101 and 94—195. i Open Consolation: Mrs Berg. Handicap Consolation: Mrs , Flight I: Miss Carter. Runner-up Handicap: Mrs, Boon. Whakatane Handicap: Mrs <' Winstone. Runner-up Open Champion: Miss Black. . , i : Open Champion:' Mrs Symmans. Before presenting the trophies the President, Mrs Spence ? welcomed the visitors and thanked them, for their patronage. Special thanks, were extended to Mr Rangi who so capably organised the tournament checked and marked the cards ; and generously presented to the club a silver up for open championship competition. Mrs Spence also thaftked Mrs Rangi for a substantial donation towards Mr Luxton and Mr Stubbs as willing helpers and Mrs Fennell who was in charge of the catering. Congratulations were due tor Mr Fennell who was responsible for the excellent condition of ilie links.
