WIFE ASSAULTED
MAORI CONVICTED TWO MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT Charged with assaulting his wife (Mate Mason) on Matiaka Mason, a Maori of Poroporo was sentenced to two months' imprisonment in Mt. Eden when he appeared before the Whakatane Court on Monday. Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. King were on the Bench. Accused pleaded guilty. For the police; Sergeant Farrell stated that on the date in question, he had received an urgent message by telephone asking him to go out to accused's residence at Poroporo. When he arrived he l'ound Mrs Mason in a badly bruised condition having been severely assaulted by her husband, following a difference they had had. Asked if he had anything to say, Mason as'ked for leniency, stating that he had a large family including seven children to support, and that although he had not the ready money to pay ,a line, he could pay one by instalments. He was working at the Whakatane Paper Mills. The Bench stated that accused was evidently inclined to forget that his wife was the best friend he had, and as he had been up on the same charge before he could not be dismissed. As stated above a sentence of two months' imprisonment was inflicted.
