BRASS BAND CONTEST

LOCAL BOYS PLACED WELL

COMPETITIONS AT WELLINGTON

Following are the official placings received by those boys of the Citizens* Band who went from Whakatane to Wellington recently to compete in the Junior Brass Band Solo Championships. The competitions were held in the Concert Chamber of the Wellington Town Hall. In Class A (17 years and under 20) P. Moore (trombone) scored 87 points being placed 7th in the class. The next of the local boys L. Broadmore (cornet) was. placed 12th with 85 points while A. IVloo're (BB flat bass) came 21st with 75 points. Twenty-four instrumentalists competed . In Class B (14 years and under 17) 5 in which there were twenty-one competitors B. Skelton (euphonium) scored 87 points being placed 4th. R. Ward (E llat bass) with 77 points, was placed 19th. Class C f which was for those under 14 years of age, contained 19 competitors. G. Skelton (cornet) was -placed Gth with 81 points in this class. In the quartet (any brass instrument) which was for those musicians under the age of 20 years, the Whakatane Citizens' Band entry conducted by Mr W. Jarrett gained 4th place with 85 points. A noticeable feature of the competitions was the universally high standard of the playing. All points were very high in many cases the player placed last being but fifteen or so points being the one placed first. The Whakatane boys played very well and upheld the honour of the town in a manner for which they must be con* gratulate-d.
