RECRUITING ACTIVITIES

LOCAL A.T.C. SQUADRON. PROGRAMME FOR NEXT WEEK As mentioned elsewhere in, this , the Air Training Corps in New Zealand is holding during the month of June ) a Do-minion-wide recruiting campaign in an endeavour to raiste the strength of the organisation by several thousand new members. At the same time, an opportunity will be taken to more or less show the general public what the A.T.C. has done and is d'oing.

Our own particular Squadron will be holding its recruiting week during* next week commencing l'rom Tuesday. As the majority of the activities will be of interest to the public we present a preview of what will take place. In the first place any function to which the public is invited is free and visitors come as the. guests of the Air Training Corps. Every clay during the week ? with the exception of course, of the A.T.C. the Strand will lie open for inspection while films will also be shown each day from mid-day till 2 p.m. Anyone at all who cares is cordially invited to comc ) and if they wish .to bring their lunch, for an hour or so of entertainment. The films will not be solely about the Air or the war but will in elude a good selection of short features of all degcrip-. tions, Wednesday evening wil perhaps be one of the most important during the week. On- that night a public inspection of the Headquarters and all equipment is to be held. Parents; and any others interested are asked, to -make a special effort to attend at the Headquarters from 7.30 p.m. on when ? 110 doubt the cadets will be all too glad to offer their services and information on any of the many aspects of training and training equipment which will be cn display. A film or two will also be shown, if possible. Plans for Thursday night will be., announced later. Friday evening will be something after the nature of Wednesday with the exception that more emphasis will be laid on the screening of films. It is hoped to show a number of these. All equipment will also be on display.

On Saturday nighty the squadron itself intends to have a night out. I' After falling in at the Headquarters i and marching up the Strand to the Regent Theatre ? they will fall out to attend a special "Picture Parade." A feature which has probably never happened in Whakatane before and which will probably not happen again for many months will be a display of pyrotechnics. Not wishing to display our ignorance to too great an extent we tactfully enquired, when this programme: was submitted cxactly what type of animal, mineral or vegetable, a pyrotechnic might happen to be. For the benefit of the uninitiated we pass the information oh. It ajh pears that pyrotechnics are the 'fireworks' of the. Air Force. By this we don't mean the drill instructors but all the many and varied types of flares, and signals in use. The display will probably be from the wharf ? and details will be advertised later. On Sunday, a full day parade is to be held on the. range at Melville's: farm, opposite the golf links at the top of the Maraetotara Gorge Road. Every of weapon the Squadron can lay its hands on including an Air Browning gun, ARMAFs, rifles } and any others possible, together with all the outside equipment avail-! able will be put to practical use. It might also be that any boy who joins the unit before or during next week will participate with the rest of the squadron in* all the activities. The publie is cordially invited to be the guests of. Squadron 35 during the recruiting 'week and it is hoped that as many people as possible will, take advantage of the invitation.
