DOES DRINK CAUSE CRIME?

(North Auckland 9/5/45). "Had a few drinks." Car conversion; 2 years in Borstal for youth of 17. (Auckland 12/5/45). "This desperate scheme was formulated when he was in an intoxicated condition." Caught redhanded, 2 years. (Auckland 12/5/45). "Been mixing his drinks." Robbery with violence; 12 months probation with strict prohibition order, to open Savings account and pay first £5 saved to the victim. (Auckland 15/5/45). / "Difference of opinion in hotel bar . . . got fairly drunk." Murder; life imprisonment with hard labour. (Wanganui 15/5/45). "Moderately intoxicated." Car hit' safety zone and telegraph pole; driver's licence cancelled for 12 months. (Auckland 19/5/45). "Cause of the trouble is drink," said the Magistrate. Theft; three months' imprisonment. (Auckland 19/5/45). "By steadily drinking beer throughout the day they had been preparing themselves to lose self-control and to behave in the brutal and disgusting manner they said the Judge. Assaults on women; 13 months hard labour. "(Auckland 19/5/45). The Courts do supply ample proof that drink does cause crime, . and booze is responsible for many a man being in prison today.
