FLOODING AT EDGECUMBE
ANXIOUS MOMENTS FOR | SETTLERS — Minor flooding in the Edgecumbe district occurred during the recent heavy rains which fortunately ceased in time to avert Hooding of a serious nature. The Rangitaiki River rose rapidly and Friday night saw more than one anxious settler viewing- the rise with concern. On Saturday morning the rise was continuing though slowty and at mid-day the bank was just holding its own. Lands Department employees quickly strengthened areas in the stopbanks that appeared to l)e weakening and the County staff worked tirelessly clearing log jams at the traffic bridge. By 4..30 p.m. 011 Saturday; the level of the. river had fallen and as reassuring reports had been received from the 'back country' anxiety was relieved.
