What ho what ho ma hearties. : y Well we can all give three heartv ■? cheers for the Germans have finally
been beaten.'lt's been a long time nearly six veavs, but we seem to
have comc out on lop once again. We must remember however that 'f * we still have the Japs to beat. 1 am sorry your page was missed last week, but it could not be helped. What with the news coming through on Tuesday and holidays being declared on Wednesday and Thursday^
I didn't have mnch time to do it 5 and the men on the paper ,didn't have much time to print, it so I am afraid it had to be left out. I have made up for it this week ? by awarding six tickets in the competition instead of the usual three
or four
I'll bet you all had a good time on V-E Day. Of course you would miss the extra as they came during the school ones; but 1 believe you broke lip a day and a half earlier than usual when the surrender in Italy was reported. Some old friends of mine happened to drop in on Tuesday. They were "some, men oft' a Dutch tanker with whom 1 sailed in the early days. You all know what a tanker is of course it is a boat which carries oil and is, in l"act j just a huge oil tank with a ship built around it. Anyway the skipper and mate and several of the crew called in. They Mere on their way from America to South Africa and having heard that I was living on Whale Island decided to stop for a few hours and have a chat over old times. _ We had quite a long talk and I was quite sorry when the time came for them to go. Well. I must close now and get on with the rest of the page. Cheerio for this week, P.T.AV. MY MAIL BOX Dear Peter the Whaler^ I would like to join your club. 1 am 10 years old and in St. 4. LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION
I received a whole swag of entries to the last -competition in which you had to sort out the jumbled names of flowers and darn near every one correct. I had a terrible tussle with them and in the end decided
that I would need some outside assistance. It was just at that moment tbat my pals from the Dutch tank:-) er rowed ashore. and there was my solution. I told them the and showed them the number of entries. They told me they Avould be very pleased to sort out the winners for me and .set to work. It took them four hours, during which time they each drank thirty-two cups of
tea and quart of to keep them on the job and even then they finished up with twelve winners instead of six. They all looked such phj'sical wrecks by the time they had finished, that I took pity on them, and told them that I would take over from there and sort out the best six myself. They all looked so relieved when I told them this. Anyway I set to work the moment they had gone and selected the winners. For this they are as follows:— Bonnie Miller Dawn Bunn Peter O'Sullivan Margaret Arbuckle Sally Herdman Bruce Taylor. Congratulations sailors. Collect I your tickets from the Beacon Office, j P.T.W. NEXT WEEK'S COMPETITION What ho there sailors, out Avith the old paint box and crayons, foi we've another picture to and this time the Scotties should be well to the fore. Do your best with it and send the results into Peter the Whaler c/o Beacon Office be--9 ' fore Wednesday. By the wav ( do not forget to put your name on youi entry. I received several entries for last week's competition with no name attached and so of course 1 had to disqualify them. Righto go ahead and see how you shape as artists. P.T.W.
