FIVE AND A HALF INCHES FALL

The heavy rain and high wind which eommenccd yesterday and continued throughout last night has been responsible for considerable flooding within the Borough. Chiefly confined to the lower Allandalc area, the flood in this part has so far not invaded any of the dwellings, but the water has risen till it is but six inches below floor level. In other parts of the Borough, drains have blocked sending the water across the road. In King Street for a distance of twenty yards on either side of the Goulstone Road intersection, cars have been forced to ford a miniature, dam which so far, is running board deep. In lower Allandale the grounds and back yards of a number of houses have been Hooded the worst being those occupicd by Messrs A. Kinnaird snr. and jnr. T. Wicks, C. H. Brcbncr R. Chadwi-ck Mrs '9 9F. Priideaux and Mrs C. Lucas. Alexander Avenue is submerged under four feet of flood* .water at its lower end where water from the Maraetotara is pouring across. In McGarvey's Road, part of the grove of gum trees about a quarter way down has been blown down and trees are blocking the road. In the country area, the Taneatua Road is blocked and is closed to all traffic. The diversion is through WTiite Pine. Bush. Although the water is as yet not over the approach to the Whakatane River bridge, the river itself is »high. All streams in the Borough have swollen substantially. The Maraetotara has reached breaking point while the Wairere, receiving the output from a waterfall twice the size of normal is also running high and swift. At present there is no danger from this source. High seas are running at Ohope and the Heads. The total j amount of rain which has fallen during the past 24 hours amounts | to 5.88 inches.
