COLLISION NEAR EDGECUMBB
TRANSPORT PROSECUTIONS
A number of traffic offenders were prosecuted by both the Transport Department and the County Traffic Inspector at the May sitting of the Whakatane Magistrate's Court last Tuesday. For driving a light delivery van along McLean's Road near Edgecumbe without due care and attention on February 23 last Georges Raymond Cowie was lined £8 and costs 225. An associate charge arising out of the same circumstances, was preferred against the owner of the van, William Cowie who was charged with allowing the vehicleto be operated -with defective brakes. A similar line was imposed. Mr T. E. Hamerton for the 1 County Council .said that defendant's- vail had struck a glancing blow along ; the side of a school bus which was stationary on a bridge approach. Defendant in a statement hacl ad-? mitted having no brakes on the van and was depending entirely upon his gears to stop. Mr I. G. Hubband 5 headmaster of tlie Whakatane School and driver of the bus, gave evidence. He first' saw the van about 70 yards away on the opposite side of the bridge. As _ it showed no signs of slowing up he had stopped almost on the bridge. * The van continued on and had been struck by the bumper' of the bus.' The driver's explanation was that-' he had broken his brakes previously and could not pull up. Inspector Carling also gave evidence. .. . For riding a horse along a public footpath at Tancatua on January 23 last W. Kuhinui was- fined 10s court J costs 10s ? interpretation fee 5.5 ? ser- x vice Bs, solicitor's fee 10/6 (total costs 33/6). Bruce Reichardt was charged with, driving a car at Pikowai on February 27 without the necessary driv-? er's license; lined 30s an,d costs 20s. Arthur Hutton who rode a motor cycle at Poroporo on February 26 without a driver's license was fined i>s and costs 225. Driving a car at Poroporo without the necessary warrant of fitness cost Ivy Emily Perkins a fine of lQs and costs.. 225.
