REFUSAL TO JOIN FORCES
ORDERED TO BE DETAINED
"I said all I had to> say at the Appeal Board sitting," said' David Campbell who appeared before Mr E. L. Walton S.M. in the Whakatane Magistrate's ' Court last Tuesday on a charge of failing to comply, with an order isslued under the Military Service Act, when; he was a person liable to be, called up. He added that he was satisfied that fielding the views he did he could not do other than than take the stand he was taking. Sergeant Farrell said the case was the. usual one associated with military objectors. The defendant hald been called for service but had by persistent appeals' avoided going to camp until recently when he was ordered to do so. He had refused. Apart from his views in this connection he was a very good citizen. In response to Campbell's remarks the magistrate said that it was not for him to consider the religious views held by defendant. That part of the proceedings had been finished with at the sitting of the Appeal Board. He would be convicted" and ordered to be detained in the Defaulters Camp.
