WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE BRANCH Tlie monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women's Institute was held in the Methodist Hall on May 1. Mrs Crozier presided over a good attendance of members. The afternoon's activities commenced with the Institute song and was followed by the reading of the Aspirations. An invitation was extended to tlie members by the Otakiri branch ! to celebrate 1 their birthday 'which is being held on May 2. In the suggestions, for the afternoon Mrs K. Stewart proposed that the Home and Country Magazine be made more interesting by each Federation contributing towards the programme. Ideas for the raising of funds to build an Institute Hal: were invited and were well responded to. The business for the day was the reading of the Council meeting's report showing that remarkable progress. has been made in the last six months. A reading of Schubert by Mrs Rushbrook proved very interesting and was enjoyed by all. The Glee Singers then rendered Schubert's Cradle Song, whereupon Mrs Rushbrook sang Schubert's "B:iss" being a very appropriate, ending to 'the reading of Schubert. A demonstration was then given by Mrs Dixon on the recovering of an Eiderdown being both helpful and instructive. The Roll "A Vei-se About Mother" was ably responded to. Mrs Carter sang in. her usual charming manner "Mother Macree." The grandmothers then paraded in fashions, of bygone days and their costunns caused much laughter. A wall competition was then given and ' «al was Avon by Mrs Carling. Afternoon lea was then served | each member being requested to retain her cup as a prize was being given to the Lucky Cup. The winner was. Mrs Darvill. Competitions for the day were won as follows: —Best article made from Hour bag to be given to Galway Guiid: Mrs Hannah 1: Mrs Dixon and Mrs Crozier 2. Three chrysanthemums: Mrs Comer 1; Mrs Hannah 2. Three leaves of silver beet: Mrs Murphy 1; Mrs Fennell 2. As usual there was a good Bring and Buy Stall. The singing of the National Anthem brought a most enjoj r able afternoon to a close.

Gardening Circle The Gardening Circle meeting was hold at Mrs Hannah's, home on Tuesday 5 April 17 ? Mrs Fennell presiding. Present: Mesdamcs Fennell, Larsen *9 Hannah Murphy Sisam f Cairns and Stewart. Seasonal readings by members on (lowers, and vegetables were most interesting alter which the hostess produced a tray of (lowers which was .shown to al: present, with the object ol' writing down the names, of as many as could be remembered in a given time. The result was that throe tied with 8 correct names and when, drawn lor Mrs Murphy was declared the winner. The Roll Call '"An Autumn Verse" was vc.y pourlv responded to. An interesting demonstration on bulbgrowing was given toy Mrs Fennel; which was most instructive. The competition A jar ol' autumn (lowers lor effect was won by Mrs Sisam. The hostess served afternoon tea which brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
