ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING

Tile annual council meeting of tile Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women's Institutes was held in St. John's- recently. Mrs. Caverhili presided over a good attendance of delegates nnrl members from all parts of the Federation district. The meeting opened with all standing to observe, two minutes' silence in memory of tho.se who have fallen in this- struggle for freedom and pea-oe. The singing of Com rades* and Friends folohved, also the hymn "O God Our Help in Ages Past." Mrs, Caverhili welcomed the delegates members and Mrs Sawer of the. Dominion Executive and expressed pleasure at seeing such a good attendance and hoped all would spend a pleasant day. Roll call of delegates and their expenses followed and apologies for absence received. The minutes of tlie previous bi-annual council meeting were read and correspondence dealt with. The voluntary Mrs Withy and Mrs Stewart gave their reports and stated that Institutes were all working in the true W.I. spirit. Mrs Reuben Looney then presented the annual report and balance sheet, which revealed a most successful I rear's working and a good credit balance. At this stage of the meeting Mrs Caverhili addressed the gathering and thanked Taneatua lor their help and work for the Eistedfod, also Waimana members for their great help as stewards and assistance with the tea arrangements. The speaker congratulated Miss Rendall of Man-

a\vahe ? on winning tlic competition for a ground plan for a country house and Mrs J. Mitchell Waimana, gained second place 1 . The talent bowl was won,again by Waimana and the potato shield went to Manawalic. Many thanks go to the auditor Mr Pearson, of who also typed a number oJ' balance sheets, and the Bay of Plent3 r Beacon and Opotiki News for publishing all Federation meetings in the past. The remits were discussed and voted on. After the luncheon adjournment W.l.'s gave their reports on the past six months' work and these were full of interest and instructive revealing the great amount of war work being done. The main feature of the afternoon was an address by Mr.s Sawer, Dominion Executive which was very inspiring. The .speaker referred to the wonderful work the AV.l.'s are doing for the country. Mrs: Sawer also gave a very interesting and educational address on several animals and birds at the Auckland Zoo especially mentioning their ulet and mothering instinct. At the conclusion of her address Mrs Sawer was accorded a hearty vote of 'tihan'ks. Officers The election of officers resulted as follows.:— President: Mrs Lc Lievre. Executive Committee: Mrs K. Brown, .Mrs R. Burgess, Mrs J. Mrs M. King, Mrs L. Grey Mrs Hedley ? Mrs F. Mayo ? Mrs Murphy, Mrs F. Withy Miss L. Kendall. ' The competitions: for the <lay proved very popular. The results were as follows:— Bowl of Flowers for Effect: Opotiki.

Tray Cloth worked in colours: Waima 11 a. Apple Short Cake: Waiotahi. Decorated Saucer of Flowers: Waiotahi. The serving of afternoon tea and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
