MANPOWER DECISIONS

RECORD WHAKATANE LIST

THREE DAY SITTING

The longest list of appeals on •record to come before the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Whakatane were heard over a three day sitting on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The committee consisted of Messrs Edwin Edwards, Chairman E. J. Wilton and A. H. Blackmore. The appeals mainly concerned men connected with primary product on lengthy sine die adjournments. Before the hearings commenced, • Mr Edwin Edwards briefly summed up the position with regard to manpower. "A scheme has been introduced," he said, "to bring men who are at 9 present serving overseas, back to New Zealand. Before this can be done, however replacements mustbe found. The War Cabinet realises that a. certain amount of disruption must take place but this cannot be avoided. In hearing the appeals, we take into consideration the appellant's family but at the same time we consider it is better to replace a Grade A man who has not had service overseas with a man who has,. and make the first man •available for mobilisation. t "For this purpose, we are conferring with the local Primary Production representatives who are proving most helpful. "Instances also occur/' he said, "where a man who has not had his appeal heard for some 12 or 18 months, and who then had only two children, now has three. In these eases, the jnan is placed in the. appropriate category, subject to a birth certificate either being produced or forwarded." The hearing of the appeals resulted as follows:— WITHDRAWN R. A.
