OUTBREAK OF FIRE

SMOKE HOUSES DESTROYED

Two smoke houses used for the purpose «l' smoking lish at the rear of the Central Grills restaurant Whakatane caught lire at approximately 5.40 yesterday morning and wore completely gutted. The buildings which were fairly con-, sistcd mainly of fire proof board, but. the interiors and battens were burnt out. In the process of smoking lish a small fire is lit in the house and the glowing embers covered with sawdust. It is surmised, that the lire was caused through some of the sawdust collecting behind the battens and being set alight. The Whakatane Fire Brigade was quickly on the spot, but it was not necessary to use. a large hos.c ? the outbreak being extinguished with bucket pumps.
