Flags of Victory The Borough Council has referred the matter of procuring suitable flags for display'during the anticipated 'Armistice' celebrations to the Finance Committee with power to make the necessary purchases. Ladies' Golf Club A Stableford Bogey match will be played on Saturday next. There will lie no draw players may choose own partners or they will be arranged at tiie clubhouse. The annual .meeting postponed from last week will be held in the clubhouse, at 1 p.m. Shifting Sands at Heads Protective work on the concrete retaining wall at the. A letter received by the Borough Council last Monday evening from an individual signing himself Alec Wright intimated that the writer was. interested in the formation of a syndicate bent upon raising £1,000 000 for the purpose of converting Ohope Beach into a popular and fashionable spa. The writer sought an interview with the town clerk. No Merry-go-Round So that there will not be unnecessary juvenile disappointment at the Awakeri Sports tomorrow the conv mittee has again asked us to em-. pHasiso the l'act that it has not been possible' for a further engagement of the Merry,-go-round and its attendant side shows. In other respects however the sports should ain<ply offset, their absence. A Fluid People ''We are a fluid people," said Mr S. Greenbie, special assistant to the American Legation. when speaking in the Municipal Hall in Palmerston North. Defeating the Objective That certain persons were continuing to place parcels of rubbish in the street waste-paper containers in spite of the rubbish collection service was mentioned by Cr C. Armstrong at the meeting of the Wha,katane Borough Council last Monday evening. This practice he said was defeating the purpose of the collection and should not be permitted. The Council agreed to give the matter publicity and if then it was not discontinued to take further action. Service Restored The following communication has been received from the DireetorI General, Post and Telegraph Department Wellington: "Telegraphic communication has been restored with Finland Phillipines and.Guam, and telegrams may now be accepted for those countries and places at pre-war rates as shown in the Guide. Messages may be in. any of the authorised plain English French, Spanish and Portugese but code not allowed. In the case of Finland telegrams of a business ture arc restricted to those ascer<taining facts or exchanging information. Telegrams for Greece may now be accepted lor that country in any of tlie nine public codes authorised for use in overseas telegrams." Courts for Motorists' The question of special courts Tor motorists, which will be fully discussed later by the Automobile Association (Wellington), was referred to briefly at a meeting of the association last week. The matter was entirely one for the Justice Department said the chairman, Mr E. A. Batt.'lt had been suggested that, one magistrate in the four centres should give his whole time to this wprk. He thought the need for this would be proved or not as prosecutions followed one. another, but an alternative suggestion might be made that all motorists cases in a centre be heard by the one magistrate. There were traffic courts in Australia, said Mr H. H. Stirling, but he did not know that they were confined ,to the; attention of one magistrate.
