POPULAR AWAKERI FUNCTION

MONTE CARLO FINALISTS

In spite of the fact that thesports at Awakeri were postponed owing to the weather the much-ad-vertised Gymkhana dance held last Saturday evening was a signal success and brought a crowded attend-* ance. Every person present enjoyed ■ themselves to the utmost and .took the keenest interest in the final the £4 Monte Carlo which was. the. highlight of the occasion. The Premier Dance Band provided that bright music for which it is now so well known, and from an ■ early start carried through a grand evening's programme of modern and: old-timers. Mr Col. McDonald was a popular M.C.

During the course of the evening Mr Don Butler made a presentation, to Cpl. Cieaver who has recently returned from overseas- and formally welcomed him home. He also presented Pte. R. Butler who was on final leave with a belt and wallet convening the district's best wishes for his safe return. Both, men replied expressing their appreciation. Flight Lieut. Crang's presence in the hail was likewise greet* ed with cheers.

The usual bountiful Awakeri supper was served by the ladies' committee after which the finalists in the Monte Carlo contest which has been, running lor the past three months took the floor. They were Mr and Mrs T. Corbett (No.i 1) > Mr F. Foote and Miss Sylvia Tyson (No. 2), Mr F. Malaquin and Miss Mildred Batey (No. 3) a Mr Frank Beveridge and Miss June Hodge (No. 4).

Scenes of the greatest enthusiasm, attended , the cutting of the and speculation was rife as to who would be the winner. •

The drawing of the final card saw Mr Foote and Miss Tyson the winners and Mr and Mrs Corbett run-ners-up for second place.

Dancing continued till a late hour,; a further competition for a dinner,, donated by Mrs Geo. Matchitt creating yet another diversion on a very memorable night.
