THE "GOOD ENDEAVOUR" LEAGUE FOR YOUNG READERS ONLY S

■pjpf-r— ity j| PETER THE WHALER I? - WHALE JSLAND ] rrxzTSiczxYZxzric-ZXXXKXZXXXXXZZJ

What ho > what ho, ma hearties. Well, it was certainly a surprise to have last Sunday so line wasn't* it. I thought by the Avay the weather looked on Saturday .we were, in for a real wet spell. In the afternoon the. three pets obviously did "not want to wander around all day. They wanted to be out and doing,,) so I decided to try something new. I found myself a piece of curved wood, and set about carving it and sand papering it and it was not long before I had quite a presentable boomerang. We set out to see if we. could perhaps knock over a shag or something with it and went right 9 ® round to the other side of the island. The three pets were very excited and wondered what was going to happen so I made them stand to one 'side, and taking a deep breath I stretched my arm and hurled it as hard as I: could, just by way of a practice shot. It acted very strangely. First the boomerang shot straight across the ground about four inches above the grass and then just .as it was about to crash into a rock it turned its nose, up and went, straight up to about a hundred feet. It turned round 9 looped the loop, nose dived, rolled over and over, did a tail spin, and then suddenly came straight for the four of us. We all dived for the shelter of the nearest rock, and the boomerang broadsided round and made a perfectly three point landing right where we had been standing. And Avhat do you think? It had picked up a passenger. Squatting complacently on one end was a bumble bee overjoyed at the idea of having found a magic carpet. This was all rather disturbing so I decided to have another shot. The boomerang did exactly the same as before except, that this time Butjrisky did not duck quickly enough and he lost all one side of-his whiskers. This, made him very angry and for several days he would not have anything to do with me apparently blaming me for what had happened. Anyway,. I decided to have one more attempt. This time I gathered all my strength and with a terrific , lunge hurled the boomerang four times as hard as any of the previous times. Wc all watched in amazement. Even Butinsky forgot to grumble for a few minutes. The boomerang Avent straight as an arrow, and the. worst, part about it is, it forgot to turn round. On it Avent faster and faster straight out to sea until in +he end it was; a mere dot on the horizon. Goodness knows ' what will happen to it but it looks ,as if^ I will have to make another. Well, I must get on with the rest of the column. Cheerio for this week. P.T.W. MY MAIL BOX Dear.Peter the Whaler ■J I am enclosing threepence in stamps. Please may I join your page. LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION Shiver my timbers, but the post-; man was bandj r when he arrived with all my mail on Wednesday afternoon. There was. such a swag that he had to stop and rest every few yards while he was climbing the hill, and when he finally reached my cave, he was very hot and perspiring freely. I gave him a long cool glass of milk, and he seemed much revived. I don't know whether the competition was too easy for you or what, but I received more entries than I have to any other competition this year. The worst part of it is. that they were all correct. Every blinkin' one of 'em. [ racked my brains for so long wondering how to award the prizes that 1 am afraid I have used up all my thinking power, and will never be able to think again. Anyway, I couldn't give you all tickets so I decided to give the prizes this week to the five neatest sent in. These go to — Sue Goodwin Ruth McDonald Sally Herdman Basil Kempton Graham Conn. Congratulations, sailors. Collect your tickets from the Beacon Office with my best compliments. Sorry I could not give all you sailors pickets but try again. You may have, more luck next time. P.T.W.
